all about Hairdresser ...

Become a Hairdresser

Hairdressing can be a rewarding and satisfying career in many senses, be it pleasing your clients, having an element of creativity, and benefiting financially.

Hairdressing can be a hugely rewarding profession, both creatively and financially. In recent years the profession has been gaining popularity. This is because there is always a consistent demand and, therefore, steady employment opportunities. Creative jobs that offer an income are hard to come by, and as the fashion industry adapts and evolves more and more artistic people are beginning to realise that hairdressing can be a very satisfying creative outlet.

You can take many different routes to become a hairdresser, each suitable to other individuals depending on their preferred learning style, the time they have available to train, and accessibility.

The minimum qualification will need to be equivalent to a level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Hairdressing. You may be able to combine these courses with other subjects like beauty therapy, make-up and nails.

You can obtain this qualification in several ways. We have compiled a guide to the most common routes to hairdressing and how much you can expect to earn in the profession.

  1. Private Courses
  2. Further Education
  3. Apprenticeship

Private Hairdressing Courses

Many educational providers offer private hairdressing courses that last between 1 to 3 months depending on the method you opt for.

Short courses that are approximately 6-8 weeks long are ideal beginner courses for those looking to understand hairdressing. Although you won’t achieve an NVQ qualification or equivalent, it’s perfect to start an understanding of whether hairdressing is the career for you before you progress on longer diplomas & NVQ hairdressing courses.

Private educational providers also offer longer, more intense courses suitable for those looking to achieve an NVQ qualification or level 3 certificate. These courses typically last between 9-12 weeks. With a level 3 certificate, you will be a work-ready hairdresser. However, with an NVQ Level 2 certificate, you will receive an internationally recognized hairdressing qualification and be a work-ready barber.

How much do private hairdressing courses cost?

The cost of private hairdressing courses can vary depending on the educational provider, the course’s length, and the qualification you’ll receive at the end of it.

Private hairdressingcourses are more expensive than further education. This is because of the additional benefits you’ll receive; smaller classes, more one-to-one training and support, skilled teachers and trainers, and more hands-on practice.

On average, you can expect to pay between £1,000 and £5,000 to complete a hairdressingcourse. Although an expensive investment, you can expect to make this cost back within a few months of working as a qualified hairdresser.

Further Education College

A hairdressing course at a further education college will take at least 1 to 2 years to complete and is available to students aged 16 and above.

Further education courses are an alternative to A-Level and allow students to obtain an NVQ certificate in hairdressing.

Learning on a further education course will involve a mixture of theory-based learning and hands-on practical training. In comparison to a private course or apprenticeship, you can expect less hands-on time and more theory-based learning.

How much do Further Education Courses Cost?

Such courses are free for students aged 16 to 18; if you are 19 or over, there may be a cost involved. You can check with your preferred educational provider for specific costs.

Apprenticeship

A hairdressing apprenticeship usually takes between 2 to 3 years to complete and is most common among 16-18-year-olds who have just completed their GCSEs.

Similarly, apprenticeships are a popular alternative to A Levels and provide students with the opportunity to gain real-world training while they learn and achieve a nationally recognized qualification.

To embark on an apprenticeship, you’ll need to find a college that offers hairdresser apprenticeships and a hair salon willing to take on an apprentice.

How much do apprentices earn?

If you decide an apprenticeship is right for you, you won’t have to pay for this qualification and will also be paid by your employer. The wage apprentices are entitled to depend on their age and the length of apprenticeship you are undertaking.

Hairdresser Licence

Many barbers and hairdressers start to cut hair at an early stage and while they’re still in school, at training, or when doing their apprenticeship. This is because they’ve gained the needed knowledge, and they already feel quite comfortable with cutting hair, even without their qualification or L2 accreditation.
Luckily, barbers & hairdressers do not need a license to cut hair in the UK. This means that you can continue to work on your clients, even if you’re still mastering your course.
However, if you are a business owner and are looking to open a hairdressing, hair salon, or barbering business of any kind, you may need to register your business with the local council. This is in the form of a Hairdresser Licence. If you plan on starting a business any time soon, make sure that you look into this and ask your local council for advice.
Lastly, if you are a freelancing artist (hairdresser, barber) and cut hair at home, you still won’t need a license. You can continue to work at your own pace and not worry a thing about any inconvenience.

DBS Check

Public facing roles like Hairdresser are subject to the completion of Basic DBS check

DBS checks are statutory checks carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service on behalf of the Home Office.

The Disclosure and Barring Service are a public body with a remit to keep the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, safe.

When you apply to work with Moorest, your DBS checks will be used to ensure you are right for public-facing work.

All frontline roles in the UK are subject to DBS checks under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act to ensure the public is properly safeguarded from those who are not right for public-facing roles.

Following your DBS check, you will receive your DBS certificate through the post and online. You will need to provide the DBS certificate to Moorest during verification process. The certificate will list any information found. If nothing is found the certificate will be blank.

To offer services on Moorest, hairdressers must hold valid Public Liability Insurance for a minimum of £2.000.000 with Treatment Risk Extension included in the policy. This type of liability insurance covers compensation claims made against you by members of the public.

Additionally, all traders with a membership plan above Basic are required to hold valid Products Liability Insurance.

The Moorest does not require all other types of insurance; however, all traders offering services on Moorest face the same risk and challenges that other businesses face, so you should carefully consider all other insurance types that can cover you and your business against unexpected losses.

Property Insurance

Property insurance covers you if your property is accidentally damaged or stolen. This property could be your business premises, or it could be your equipment and stock. You should ensure you insure for the full value of your property because you may be penalized if you are found to be underinsured in the event of a claim.

If you’re a mobile trader operating mainly on customer premises, it’s important to make sure that your equipment and stock are covered while it’s away from your business address.

Liability insurance

Liability insurance covers you if a compensation claim is made against you. As well as paying any compensation awarded, it also pays any legal fees and associated expenses incurred as a result of the claim. Your liability insurer will also handle the claim on your behalf, so you don’t need to worry about complex legal issues.

Compensation claims can be expensive to settle, so this is an essential type of insurance. Relatively minor injuries can result in five-figure settlements, and more serious injuries can cost ten times as much.

Employer’s liability insurance is a legal requirement if you have any employees. It covers compensation claims made against you by your employees.

Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement, although you shouldn’t consider trading without it because of the potential for substantial compensation claims to be made against you. This type of liability insurance covers compensation claims made against you by members of the public.

Product liability insurance is similar. However, rather than covering compensation claims arising from things you have done or failed to do, product liability insurance covers you if a compensation claim is made against you due to a defect in a product you have sold or supplied.

You should make sure that your public and products liability insurance contains a financial loss extension because otherwise, purely economic losses could be excluded from the cover, as most public and products liability insurance only cover compensation where injury or damage is involved.

You should also make sure that your public liability insurance includes a treatment risk extension. A standard public liability insurance policy will not cover professional acts. That could mean that claims that arise due to your performing services would not be covered.

Legal expenses insurance

Compensation claims aren’t the only form of legal action you could find yourself involved with. Other types of legal action could be:

  • Disputes with clients or neighbors
  • Employment tribunals
  • Criminal charges brought against you
  • Tax/VAT investigations

All of these types of legal action can result in large legal bills. Legal expenses insurance covers you against these unexpected legal bills. Your legal expenses insurance will also be able to advise and help you deal with any unexpected legal action.

Personal accident insurance

As a self-employed trader, you don’t get sick pay in the same way you would if you were employed by someone else. If you cannot work because you’ve been injured, you’re unable to work, but the bills still need to be paid at the end of each month.

Personal accident insurance protects you if you find yourself in this situation. It pays you a weekly benefit amount if you’re unable to work temporarily, and if you won’t be able to work permanently, it pays a lump sum. A death benefit is also payable if you die

What is the income of a hairdresser?

With just a few clients a day, you can expect to earn about £60-£90 per day income. If you work a 6-day week and 50 weeks per year, this equates to £20,000 to £28,000.

Most of the hairdressers have 10-20 clients every day, so pro hairdresser can earn as much as £1000 per week or £50k per year with time and experience.

Can I make money selling products?

Yes, in fact, it is quite important to earn some extra money by selling hair products. With Moorest, you can offer additional upgrades, services, and products to clients during the booking process which will further increase your income.

On average, a hairdresser can bank an extra £7000 to £10000 per year.
