Do you know what life was like before electricity? Electricity is essential to modern-day life, and the modern world can’t exist without electricians who maintain it all. If you’re considering becoming an electrician but thinking about other trades, consider a few reasons why you should become an electrician and work with Moorest:
It pays the most of all the professions.
As in 2019, electricians’ salary expectation is £35,172 on average, and this is nearly £2500 more than plumbers. It’s largely caused by skill shortage in this sector since the recession hit in 2008 when the skilled workers left the industry; therefore, the electricians left are in short supply since the market recovery means they can charge more!
Exciting, enjoyable work
Dealing with electrics can be difficult; you have to have a great understanding of practical installation skills, electrical diagrams, and health and safety. You need to think quickly to provide solutions for problems working away, ensuring your work is compliant with the UK’s wiring and building regulations. Some days you may be carrying out a regular install, then you could be fault-finding, and then you could be investigating and testing. This challenge and diversity will keep you active and ensure that no two days are ever the same.
A profession and skills for a lifetime
Once you become an electrician, it’s a skill which will see you through until the end of your life; this is a sort after skill for which your friends and colleagues will be interested in seeking your help and advice.
Property side projects
Most tradesmen or women have many friends within the industry, which means it’s easy for them to do up houses cheaply and sell them on, which is a healthy way of topping up that income.
No need for office space
One of the most tempting reasons to work as an electrician is your own mobile office; all you need is a van; this is where you can have business meetings with co-workers and keep the old lunches you choose to swap for fast food, newspapers, and dirty old wellies.
The working environment
This is most likely the most crucial reason to become an electrician. Not everybody is interested in working behind a counter, drafting emails, and signing contracts; if you look for a profession with a hands-on job, then electrician jobs could be for you. More often than not, electricians are on the move working in various homes and areas; even electricians who offer electrical work for a single company will likely be on the move frequently. You’re not bound down to the same four walls of an office building with the same co-workers to strict working times, allowing you to encounter various homes and businesses around the country.
Be your own boss
If you’re interested in owning a company, many electricians are self-employed professionals who own and manage their own company; this is a good reason to work as an electrician.
Affordable training
A huge advantage to becoming an electrician is that you won’t collect an unbelievable amount of student debt like other university courses on the market; preparing to become an electrician can be a lot cheaper.
Work opportunities
As an electrician, you will encounter the occasion for progression in your career. As an electrician, you might work as an Electrical Engineer, Contract Supervisor, and even Electrical Design Engineer within your field.
Skills deficit means growing demand.
We assume that we’ll witness an explosion of jobs over the next ten years. So, there are some excellent reasons to become an electrician. It is an excellent idea to be interested in a stable job for the future and with a high salary potential.
all about Electrician...
What does an electrician do?
Electricians work across homes, businesses, and in industry. You could be working on a wide range of projects. Careers can be divided into the following areas:
- installation electrician – fitting power systems, lighting, fire protection, security, and data-network systems around the home and in businesses
- maintenance electrician - checking systems are running efficiently and safely
- electrotechnical panel builders – assembling and fitting control panels that run electrical systems
- machine repair and rewind electrician - repairing and servicing electrical motors and machinery, e.g. transformers
- highway systems electrician – building and repairing street lighting and traffic management systems
What do I need to do to become an electrician?
You’ll need to have an industry-recognized level 3 qualification, for example, a level 3 diploma in electrotechnical services. Most people get into this career via an apprenticeship. It normally takes two to four years to become fully qualified.
GCSEs grade D or above, including Maths and English, would be an advantage.
Alternatively, you could prepare for working in this industry by taking a part-time or full-time college training course in electrical installation.
Essential qualifications
- Industry recognized level 3 qualification e.g. level 3 diploma in electrotechnical services.
- Level 3 diploma in electrical installations if part of an apprenticeship.
License
In 2005 the Government introduced electrical safety rules into the Building Regulations for England and Wales. Because of this, most fixed electrical installation work in homes must, by law, meet the Building Regulations.
Part P states that anyone carrying out electrical installation work in a home must ensure that the work is designed and installed to protect people from fire and electric shocks.
Part P applies to any changes made to existing installations, including any parts that have been rewired. In April 2013, further changes were introduced, reducing the range of electrical installation work that is notifiable, removing some kitchens and outdoors requirements.
You can find full details on Part P on the Communities and Local Government website: www.communities.gov.uk
Electricians carrying out work in England and Wales have to comply with Part P of the Building Regulations, whereas Scotland is the Building Standards system. At present, Northern Ireland has no equivalent statutory requirement.
What electrical work is covered by this law?
All electrical installation work in a home, garden, conservatory or outbuilding must meet the Building Regulations.
Apart from some types of minor work, all electrical work must either be reported to the local-authority building-control or carried out by an electrician registered with one of the Government-approved scheme providers.
DBS Check
Public-facing roles like Electrician are subject to the completion of Basic DBS check
DBS checks are statutory checks carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service on behalf of the Home Office.
The Disclosure and Barring Service are a public body with a remit to keep the public, particularly children and vulnerable adults, safe.
When you apply to work with Moorest, your DBS checks will be used to ensure you are right for public-facing work.
All frontline roles in the UK are subject to DBS checks under the 1974 Rehabilitation of Offenders Act to ensure the public is properly safeguarded from those who are not right for public-facing roles.
Following your DBS check, you will receive your DBS certificate through the post and online. You will need to provide the DBS certificate to Moorest during the verification process. The certificate will list any information found. If nothing is found, the certificate will be blank.
To offer services on Moorest, electricians must hold valid Public Liability Insurance for a minimum of £2.000.000. This type of liability insurance covers compensation claims made against you by members of the public.
Additionally, all traders with a membership plan above Basic are required to hold valid Products Liability Insurance.
The Moorest does not require all other types of insurance; however, all traders offering services on Moorest face the same risk and challenges that other businesses face, so you should carefully consider all other insurance types that can cover you and your business against unexpected losses.
Property Insurance
Property insurance covers you if your property is accidentally damaged or stolen. This property could be your business premises, or it could be your equipment and stock. You should ensure you insure for the full value of your property because you may be penalized if you are found to be underinsured in the event of a claim.
If you’re a mobile trader operating mainly on customer premises, it’s important to make sure that your equipment and stock are covered while it’s away from your business address.
Liability insurance
Liability insurance covers you if a compensation claim is made against you. As well as paying any compensation awarded, it also pays any legal fees and associated expenses incurred as a result of the claim. Your liability insurer will also handle the claim on your behalf, so you don’t need to worry about complex legal issues.
Compensation claims can be expensive to settle, so this is an essential type of insurance. Relatively minor injuries can result in five-figure settlements, and more serious injuries can cost ten times as much.
Employer’s liability insurance is a legal requirement if you have any employees. It covers compensation claims made against you by your employees.
Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement, although you shouldn’t consider trading without it because of the potential for substantial compensation claims to be made against you. This type of liability insurance covers compensation claims made against you by members of the public.
Product liability insurance is similar. However, rather than covering compensation claims arising from things you have done or failed to do, product liability insurance covers you if a compensation claim is made against you due to a defect in a product you have sold or supplied.
You should make sure that your public and products liability insurance contains a financial loss extension because otherwise, purely economic losses could be excluded from the cover, as most public and products liability insurance only cover compensation where injury or damage is involved.
You should also make sure that your public liability insurance includes a treatment risk extension. A standard public liability insurance policy will not cover professional acts. That could mean that claims that arise due to your performing services would not be covered.
Legal expenses insurance
Compensation claims aren’t the only form of legal action you could find yourself involved with. Other types of legal action could be:
- Disputes with clients or neighbors
- Employment tribunals
- Criminal charges brought against you
- Tax/VAT investigations
All of these types of legal action can result in large legal bills. Legal expenses insurance covers you against these unexpected legal bills. Your legal expenses insurance will also be able to advise and help you deal with any unexpected legal action.
Personal accident insurance
As a self-employed trader, you don’t get sick pay in the same way you would if you were employed by someone else. If you cannot work because you’ve been injured, you’re unable to work, but the bills still need to be paid at the end of each month.
Personal accident insurance protects you if you find yourself in this situation. It pays you a weekly benefit amount if you’re unable to work temporarily, and if you won’t be able to work permanently, it pays a lump sum. A death benefit is also payable if you die
